Four soundproof panoramic Vistadome narrow-gauge coaches Monday ran successfully on Kalka-Shimla UNESCO-protected narrow-gauge railway track along with three other toy trains to Shimla from Kalka on Monday.
The 90-km-long Kalka-Shimla railway track had been disrupted at many places due to the landslide, falling of trees and sludge due to the heavy rainfall for the last two days. The Vistadome coaches designed at the rail coach factory in Kapurthala have been undergoing tests at a speed of 22km per hour for the last two weeks. The speed of these Vistadome coaches is scheduled to be taken to 28 km per hour in the coming days.
“Kalka-Shimla railway track was opened to the trains on Monday. Four panoramic Vistadome coaches along with three toy trains went to Shimla from Kalka railway station. Similarly, three toy trains came from Shimla station to Kalka station. The railway track was not damaged but it was submerged, covered under the sludge, debris and fallen trees. Though it is a routine during heavy rain, this time its density was large,” said Sita Ram Meena, Superintendent, Kalka Railway Station.
On Friday, boarded passengers in many Kalka-Shimla trains were asked to deboard the trains at Taksaal, Solan and Koti railway station due to the blockage on the railway track. The harrassed passengers had boarded private taxis, roadways buses to reach their destinations. The passengers coming from Shimla to Kalka in toy trains too suffered the similar fate.
Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Ambala, Mandeep Singh Bhatai, said, “Kalka-Shimla track is open now. Vistadoom coaches are on one-month- long trial. Indeed, the coaches reached Shimla but the trial is still going on. There are many parameters, which are yet to be achieved.”
