The computerised information mechanism, hanging fire for over five years,is functional and the police are actively issuing challans.

At present,CCTV cameras are installed at 20 key traffic signals (see box) in the city. Through a hi-tech

system,these cameras capture

photographs of vehicles breaking traffic rules and automatically issue challans.

But at present, challans are being issued manually from the control room at Traffic Lines in Sector 29.

“At present, challans are being issued manually based on the CCTV footage. The automatic challaning system will take some time. By then we will have details of every vehicle registered in the city,” SP (traffic)

H S Doon said. “Once the automatic challaning system is functional,

it will be connected to all traffic

signals through CCTV cameras

and then the challans will be issued automatically.”

A senior police officer said the drive to challan violators through CCTV cameras will be intensified in the coming days.
