The officials of Jalandhar Municipal Corporation (JMC) were taken to task by the Estimates Committee of the State Assembly on Thursday. The committee,headed by MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha,took a first-hand account of the unauthorised buildings,encroachments and other irregularities in various parts of the city and asked the MC officials to take action against Municipal Town Planner (MTP) Tarlok Singh.
He directed the MC to demolish a building coming up in Nakodar Chowk in violation of the building byelaws. Ten members of the committee were present in the meeting with the officials to review the working of JMC.
The members visited various spots in city till evening. Valtoha asked the MC officials to explain why no action had been taken against erring parties.
Valtoha told The Indian Express that he observed inefficiency and corruption in the corporation which causes huge revenue losses and sets a bad precedent.
They also received many complaints against Irrigation and Local Bodies Department,he added.
