Late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar’s wife Amneet gives consent for autopsy; last rites today

The Chandigarh Police said multiple requests had been sent to the family of Y Puran Singh by the inspector general of police and the senior superintendent of police for an early autopsy.

The family of Haryana cadre IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who allegedly died by suicide last week, said they have given consent for his post-mortem examination, which will be conducted Wednesday at PGIMER, Chandigarh.

Y Puran Kumar was found dead with a gunshot wound at his residence in Sector 11 on October 7.

Chandigarh Police officers confirmed the development, and said that the post-mortem examination will be conducted by a board of doctors and in the presence of a magistrate.

“The entire post-mortem examination shall also be videographed,” said a police officer.

The late IPS officer’s wife, Amneet P Kumar, said she has given her consent for the post-mortem examination of her husband. Amneet is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 2001 batch of the Haryana cadre.

“In view of the assurance extended by the U.T. Police for conducting a fair, transparent, and impartial investigation, and the commitment conveyed by the Government of Haryana to take appropriate action against any erring officials in due course of law, I have consented to the conduct of the post-mortem examination of Late Sh. Y. Puran Kumar, IPS,” she said in her statement.

“Considering the evidentiary importance of a timely post-mortem and in the larger interest of justice, I have agreed for the same to be carried out as per prescribed procedure, by the constituted Board of Doctors, with the presence of a ballistic expert, under the supervision of a Magistrate, and with videography of the entire process to ensure complete transparency,” she added.

Amneet Y Kumar said she has “full faith in the Judiciary and the Police authorities”. “I sincerely hope that the investigation will be conducted in a professional, impartial, and time-bound manner, so that the truth emerges in accordance with law.”

“My full cooperation shall continue to be extended to the investigating team so that the process is expedited and justice is served at the earliest. In view of the ongoing investigation, no further public statement shall be issued at this stage, and I request the media to respect the sensitivity of the matter.”

The family also said they will hold his cremation at 4 pm at the crematorium in Sector 25 in Chandigarh.

“With profound grief we inform you that the funeral of Late Shri Y. Puran Kumar IPS will start today at 3pm from House No 132, Sector 24A, Chandigarh,” they said.

Court notice to Amneet Puran Kumar

On Tuesday, the Chandigarh District Court issued notice to Amneet Puran Kumar over an application filed by the Chandigarh Police asking her to identify the body of her husband at PGIMER for the post-mortem proceedings.

The notice was issued by the Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMIC), Raminder Kaur, for October 15. “…you are hereby directed to file a reply to the said application either personally or through counsel on October 15, 2025, failing of which the application will be decided on merits…,” read the order of the court, while directing Amneet P Kumar.

According to officers, multiple requests had been sent to the family by the inspector general of police (IGP) and the senior superintendent of police (SSP) for an early autopsy, after which the Chandigarh Police was constrained to move the court for direction to the family to come forward for the identification of the body for the post-mortem examination.

“It was conveyed that it is absolutely vital at this stage that a post-mortem be conducted at the earliest to preserve important forensic evidence and in the interest of justice,” said a Chandigarh Police officer.

Meanwhile, the Chandigarh Police have also moved a court seeking a direction to the wife of Y Puran Kumar to produce his laptop for further investigation. The notice on this application has been issued for October 16.

The police Special Investigation Team (SIT) Tuesday also issued notices and letters to the Haryana Government for the production of certain documents.
