Inquiry panel finds anomalies in layout plan of New Chandigarh

These anomalies were highlighted in an inquiry report on December 28 last year but are yet to be rectified.

ANOMALIES HAVE been detected by an inquiry committee in the layout plan of New Chandigarh, the dream project of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. As per the report of the committee, a power grid has been set up at the wrong location. Further, a water treatment plant that is not required has been proposed.

These anomalies were highlighted in an inquiry report on December 28 last year but are yet to be rectified. Therefore, a project report was sent to the state government on February 15 this year. The inquiry was conducted by a committee headed by the chief engineer. The committee informed the senior town planner about the faults in the layout plan of New Chandigarh.

Sources in the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) told Chandigarh Newsline that a water treatment plant was proposed to come up in New Chandigarh area but now the same plant was coming at a nearby village. Sources said that such a treatment plant was not needed in the area and it was wrongly proposed. The water treatment plant for both Mohali and New Chandigarh was to come up at Sehinpur village near Kurali. The sources added that sewage treatment plant was a necessity in the area and it was never proposed.

Sources said that the power grid coming up in New Chandigarh was going to be set up at a spot where a water body was already located. A road is also proposed from the spot and the grid could be shifted to other place. An official said that there was no approach road to the grid and if anything happened, it would be a total blackout in Mullanpur area.

R K Jaidka, former director of Urban Housing Development Authority, confirmed that these faults were highlighted in the report but these had not been rectified.
