In the Look East Policy of India,Vietnam has emerged as one of the most important destinations, especially for trade, said Jitendra Nath Misra,Indian Consul General to Vietnam,on Tuesday.
Misra was delivering a lecture on Indo-Vietnam relations in bilateral and regional contexts, with emphasis on economic linkages,at the Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development.
Asserting that there is an enormous goodwill between both the countries,Misra said that Vietnam sees India as a strategic partner and a benign power.
Citing Tatas $ 4.4 million deal for setting up a steel project in Vietnam,he said the Indo-Vietnam trade has been growing despite the economic slowdown. Misra added that there was 62 per cent increase in business last year and the trade target set by the prime ministers of both the countries was achieved.
He said there has been a 45 per cent increase in exports from Vietnam to India, and eight groups, including CII and FICCI,had visited the South Eastern country last year.
Besides, many Vietnamese students are lining up for scholarships in Indian institutes for IT and English courses,he added.
