Indian workers in Libya are at great risk: Parents

Fifty-year-old Garib Das of Rahon in Nawanshahr district is worried about the safe return of his son,who is in Libya, where civil war is on.

Fifty-year-old Garib Das of Rahon in Nawanshahr district is worried about the safe return of his son,who is in Libya, where civil war is on. His son Avtar Chand,a labourer, had gone to Libya 10 months back after paying more than Rs 1 lakh to a Jalandhar-based travel agency and is now spending his days on trees in the forests of Libya due to frequent attacks on their camp by protesters.

The boy had called the family two days ago to say that he,along with a large number of boys, was spending time in jungles and they had nothing to eat. He also told his father that on Thursday their camp was attacked by protesters and on Saturday the protesters had snatched all their belongings and they had to run into the jungle to save their lives.

Garib Das’s son is one of more than 100 Punjabi boys living in the shadow of fear in Libya due to internal disturbance there. A large number of parents today also submitted a memorandum to the Jalandhar deputy commissioner (DC) for forwarding it to the ministry of external affairs for taking steps for the safe return of these boys.

Ram Rattan Lamba, brother of Rajkumar from Kabulpur village in Jalandhar, said phone calls made to Raj Kumar revealed that even the Libyan government was not aware of their present stay because they had hidden themselves in trees, said Lamba.

“They are not getting enough food, and they are in a bad shape,” said Joginder Pal,a resident of Jandiala village near Jalandhar and father of Amarjit, who is stranded in Libya. “Amarjit told us over phone that earlier their employer company had exploited them by not giving them promised work and now internal war had snatched their job,” said Joginderpal.

Lamba said they had submitted a memorandum to make the government aware about the whereabouts of their wards so that they could be brought back safely.

It may be noted that thousands of Punjabis have been living in Libya and many of them are in really bad shape due to internal disturbance in the country.
