A Rodemary herb,for me,always conjured an image of a plant with rose-like soft satiny feel of the leaves and carrying the smell of sweet roses. Not until I came across the real herb plant.

Modern herbalists recommend the use of Rosemary herb for the treatment of depression,indigestion and even muscle aches!

A Rodemary herb,for me,always conjured an image of a plant with rose-like soft satiny feel of the leaves and carrying the smell of sweet roses. Not until I came across the real herb plant. The leaves to my surprise were spikey,short,skinney and woolley needles carrying a eucalyptus or camphor like smell. However,my research on the health benefits of this magic herb even got me to fall in love with this spikey bush which had little or no resemblance whatsoever to the real roses. The spikes of rosemary have essential oils which contain tannin and resin. The oil makes a stimulating rub for arthritic conditions. Its uniqueness in smell and taste is what makes Rosemary an important herb to flavour wines,vinegar,oil and butter. Sprigs of rosemary when tossed into barbecue grills mask the meaty smell and impart a delicious character to meat. This herb belongs to the family of mints which stimulates nerves and blood circulation. Modern herbalists recommend it for the treatment of depression,indigestion,headaches and muscle aches.

The most important constituents of Rosemary are carnosol,carnosic acid,caffeic acid and its derivatives such as rosmarinic acid. These compounds have powerful antioxidant activity. Rosmarinic acid is a strong anti-inflammatory agent. Rosemary helps in stimulating appetite and in the secretion of gastric juices. It is also used as supportive therapy for rheumatism and circulatory problems. It is used in headaches,as well as for nervous complaints. Externally,claim trichologist Rosemary is very often used in hair care products and lotions as it stimulates the hair follicles to renewed activity and prevents premature baldness. It is also a hot favourite with the cosmetologists for its anti-aging properties. To avoid bad breath,use Rosemary as an effective mouth rinse. Because of its anti-bacterial,anti-fungal and anti-parasitic properties,it becomes a very useful herb to have it potted in your little kitchen patch.

Rosemary can take some time to fill in as a plant,so be patient. It is usually propagated by cuttings. Seeds can take time to sprout but it is much faster to start with a cutting. Try rooting it out in a glass of water with a little of the growth hormone added to speed it up. Then you can transfer the little joey into the mother earth. The three fundamentals for successfully growing Rosemary are enough sunlight,good drainage and proper air circulation.

To make use of Rosemary’s health boosting properties try a cup of Rosemary herbal infusion. It helps in colds,influenza,indigestion,fatigue and headaches. One sprig with a cup of boiling water poured over it and left to stand for five minutes,makes a revitalizing and stress-relieving tea.

ROSEMARY LEMON OLIVE OIL

Ingredients

Olive oil,1 cup

Fresh Rosemary twig

Fresh lemon grass

Fresh thyme twig

Clove of Garlic,two

Salt

Peppercorns,red and black

Method

Combine all the above ingredients in a clear bottle. Allow it to sit for at least a week. Drizzle over salads or as a dip for bread.

CRUNCHY ROSEMARY AND GARLIC ROAST POTATOES

Ingredients

Potatoes,five medium-sized

Garlic infused olive oil,2 tbsp

Rosemary,1 tbsp

Method

Pre-heat oven to 180 degree Celsius. Cube potatoes along with peal into 1.5 inch cubes. Place into a pot of boiling water and cook for about 10 minutes (the sides of the cube should be tender,but the potato piece should still hold its shape). Drain water from the pot,and then pour in the oil to dress the potato. Now add chopped Rosemary. Mix it well. Place potatoes on a baking tray.
