Over-exercising bad for knee joints: Experts
Over exercising can put stress on knee joints, doctors have opined, adding that long-term effects of strenous activities show in older age. We all exercise in different ways to keep ourselves fit and healthy. While some of us go to gymnasiums, others prefer outdoor activities like walking, jogging or yoga. Irrespective of the kind of exercise we do,our knee joints come under a lot of stress and pressure. Since they bear our body weight during all kinds of activities, this load increases manyfolds during exercise, said orthopedician Dr H S Batth.
The high impact activities include jogging, tennis, climbing and weight training. The low impact activities, which are more knee-friendly,include walking and stationary cycling, say experts. Doctors said while one must increase the rigours of exercise gradually,in case of any pain or swelling, exercise must be stoped immediately.
Applying ice on the affected area, taking sufficient rest and consulting a doctor in case of persistent pain are other steps to follow in case of emergency. Repeated injuries over a period of time puts undue pressure on knee joints and can lead to early onset of arthritis, said an expert.
