Vohra steadies Bindra XI innings
A fine century by Manan Vohra (117 off 230 balls) guided IS Bindra XI to a total of 222 runs for the loss of three wickets in their first innings against NS Sidhu XI in a match of the Emerging Players’ Tournament for Umesh Kumar Trophy being played at LIC Cricket ground on Monday. Resuming their innings at 70 for 1 on Monday in reply to Sidhu XI’s first innings total of 218,IS Bindra XI were 222 for the loss three wickets in 62.3 overs at the end of day’s play. In the second match being played at Patiala between MP Pandove XI and Chaman Lal Malhotra XI,the first day’s play was washed out because of soggy ground conditions due to overnight rain. Pandove XI won the toss and elected to bat.Pandove XI were 200 for 6 at close of play. Rahul claimed four wickets for 28 runs.
Bowlers set up GNPS win
A superb performance by their bowlers guided Guru Nanak Public School,Sector 36,to a thumping nine-wicket win over Ryan International Public School in a league match of the Inter-School Saupin’s Gold Cup U-14 Cricket Tournament being organised by Saupin’s School,Sector 32,at Guru Nanak Public School,Sector 36. Batting first,Ryan School were bundled out for 26 runs in just 12 overs. Shubham Arora claimed three wickets. GNPS reached the target for the loss of one wicket in 4.3 overs. In another match,Yadavindra Public School scored a six-wicket win over DAV Public School,Sector 15. DAV-15 batted first and scored 82 runs for five. In reply,YPS reached the target for the loss of four wickets in 19 overs.
The Chandigarh Sports Department will host Senior Chandigarh Weightlifting Championships for men and women on September 14 and 15 at Weightlifting Coaching Centre,Sector 42 Sports Complex. The weigh-in schedule for women is 8 am on September 14 and for men at 8 am on September 15 at Sports Complex-42. Competitions will begin at 10 am for men and women on September 14 and 15,respectively. Only bonafide residents of Chandigarh can take part in the championship. Last date for the submission of entries is September 13 with Umeshwari Sharma (9417778843),weightlifting coach.
Gurbaj selected for CWG
Cyclist Gurbaj Singh from Guru Nanak Dev University has been selected in the Indian cycling team for the 2010 Commonwealth games to be held in Delhi in October. GNDU Vice-Chancellor,Ajaib Singh Brar,and Prof. Kanwaljeet Singh,director sports,congratulated Singh on his achievement.
GCG-11 start campaign on winning note
Government College for Girls,Sector 11,Chandigarh,ended the challenge of Rangharia Girls College,Ludhiana,with a 3-1 win in the Panjab University Inter-College Softball (Women) Tournament being played on knock-out basis at Panjab University grounds on Monday. Shakuntala,Bhavya and Roopa scored one run each. In another match,Khalsa College for Women,Ludhiana,ended the challenge of MCM DAV College,Chandigarh,with an 11-0 win. Amanjot and Sukhpreet scored two runs each. In the last match, Panjab University Campus,Chandigarh ended the challenge of SDP College for Women,Ludhiana. In the Panjab University Inter-College Handball (Women) Tournament,Guru Gobind Singh khalsa College for Women,Jhar Sahib (Ludhiana),scored a 15-4 win over MG Khalsa Girls College,Kottan.
