Ambala doctor commits suicide,blames wife,in-laws in note
AMBALA: Naraingarh civil hospital eye surgeon Dr Paramjit Singh,who committed suicide by consuming some poisionous substance,died at PGI,Chandigarh,on Wednesday night. He had allegedly left behind a suicide note in which he held his wife,her father and brother for responsible for the extreme step. His wife is posted at Sadhaur as a child development project officer. The police took the suicide note in possession and started investigation. Meanwhile,Dr Singh was cremated on Thursday.

Punjab Education Board to train teachers on National Curriculum Framework
MOHALI: The two-day,‘Textbook review and evaluation workshop’ of experts held by Punjab School Education Board in collaboration with NCERT concluded with a promise to make textbooks more attractive,innovative and informative. It was decided to impart special training to teachers for disseminating knowledge,according to the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2005. Addressing the workshop,board chairman Dr Dalbir Singh Dhillon said Punjab is the only state where three languages and mathematics are compulsory subjects at the secondary level. Therefore,study of these subjects needs to be more interesting and simple. He stressed upon making other subjects more professional and responsive. Experts from NCERT expressed that NCF,Right of Education and Rashtriya Madhyamiak Sikhya Abhian programmes are to guide the future line of action in the field of education.

Youth Congress Cell launches water conservation campaign
CHANDIGARH: Members of the Intellectual Cell of Chandigarh Territorial Youth Congress plan to launch a campaign to generate awareness about saving water. The e-campaign ‘Jal Hai Toh Kal Hai’ would involve sending a message to residents daily about ways to conserve water. The members would also be visiting colonies and approaching resident welfare associations in order to spread the message. Door-to-door campaigning would also be undertaken.

Another shell recovered in Ambala drain
AMBALA: Another shell was recovered during the cleaning of Gudgudia Nallah in Ambala Cantonment on Thursday. The three-feet shell weighed more than 15 kg. A suspected bombshell was found yesterday which was handed over to the Army. It was said that the shell might have been purchased in scrap and then discarded in the drain. The Army personnel who inspected the shell claimed that since it was painted,it might have been placed for display somewhere from where it might have been stolen.

27 packets of poppy husk found
AMBALA: As many as 27 packets of poppy husk was recovered during a joint inspection of GRP and RPF in a Chhatisgarh-bound train on Thursday. The packets were found bundled in a bag which was abandoned in the train. Police have taken the bag into into possession. Each packet weighed around 800 GRAMS.

Columbia Asia launches child health plan
PATIALA: Columbia Asia Hospital,Patiala,launched its new Child Growth and Development Clinic on Thursday,which will cater to child anthropometrical measurements (measurement and study of the human body and its parts and capacities),and will also provide interaction with dietician,consultation with pediatrician,detection of vitamin or mineral (micronutrient) deficiency and so on.
The company press release stated that a medical opinion about the child will be given after complete medical check-up and the line of treatment will be prescribed accordingly. MD (Pediatrics) Gautam Mittal will cater to patients from 2 pm to 5 pm,Tuesday and Thursday,for children in the age group of one to 18 years.

Sector-51 residents put forth demands
Chandigarh: Residents of Chandigarh Housing Board,Sector 51,gave a representation to the Mayor,highlighting various demands. They have demanded that the encroachment in the green belt be removed and ground be levelled. They further stated that new plants needed to be planted in the green belt.

Sector-32 resident arrested with drugs
CHANDIGARH: The Operations Cell of the Chandigarh Police arrested a man with 250 grams opium on Thursday. High drama was witnessed in Sector 32 when the wife of the accused created a scene after his arrest. A raid was conducted at the residence of Sukhwinder Singh in Sector 32 on a tip-off. Sukhwinder allegedly ran into his house on seeing a police team in plain clothes. His wife then called the police alleging that some unidentified persons had barged into her residence and were kidnapping her husband. Officers reached the spot and learnt that her husband was arrested with opium and then left. Inspector Malkiat Singh of the Operations Cell said a case under Section 18 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act had been registered against the accused. Sukhwinder was arrested last year too with 400 grams of the contraband.

Job fair held in Mohali
MOHALI: Educated unemployed persons were offered jobs at a job fair organised by the Department of Employment Generation and Training,Punjab,in Industrial Area,Phase VII,on Thursday. Candidates for various jobs of painter,machinist grinder,welder,tool and dye-maker,tractor mechanic,AC and refrigerator mechanic,fitter,diesel engine mechanic,auto mechanic,motor mechanic,carpenter,electrician,radio and TV mechanic,machinist,turner and steno typist turned up in large numbers at the first-of-its-kind camp. Even Class V,VIII,X,XII,graduates,marketing executives,accountants,office assistants and security guards were offered jobs. ITI passouts also got placed. More than 30 companies came to employ skilled workers. “We are working as a channel between the educated youths and the underemployed companies without charging anything from either parties,” said Industry Director K J S Cheema.

1 dead,12 injured in bus-truck collision

AMBALA: A woman died while 12 others were injured when a Haryana Roadways bus collided with a truck near Mohra village,10 kilometre from here,on NH-1 on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Pooja,a resident of Sawan Vihar,Ambala Cantonment. The injured were rushed to the civil hospital in Ambala Cantonment and are undergoing treatment. Bus driver Surjan Singh said the brakes of the vehicle failed and a truck rammed into it. The bus was on its way to Una from Gurgaon.
