Procession planned on Baisakhi eve
A nagar kirtan to commemorate the formation of Khalsa Panth will be organised on the eve of Baisakhi on April 12. The procession will be taken out from Gurdwara Sahib Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Sector 29 and pass through the Sector-29 market,dividing road of Sector 29 and 30,ITI,Gurdwara Nanaksar Sahib,markets of Sector 28,27,Ramgarhia Bhawan,Sector-19 gurdwara,Sector-20 masjid road and markets of Sector 20,21,22,23 and 37. It would finally conclude at the Sector-37 Gurdwara Sahib Nanak Darbar.
Rs 1 lakh stolen from Sector 22 shop
A trickster fled with a bag containing Rs one lakh from inside a provision store in Sector 22 here today. The miscreant asked for cold drink from the store owner and as the latter turned to open the refrigerator,his bag was taken away. Ram Parkash,the 68-year old owner of the shop,Sham Provision Store near the Aroma light point,had just opened the shop when the unidentified miscreant approached him. The police said the owner had not installed any CCTV cameras inside the shop,which is mandatory. The complainant claimed the bag contained some donation amount apart from Rs one lakh. The donation was collected during a late-night jagran organised at the Sector 22 market on Sunday night.
A delegation of the UT Powermen Union met the UT Administrator and submitted a memorandum with the demands of the electricity employees. The delegation apprised the Administrator about the grievances of the employees and stressed there was an acute staff shortage. Vacant posts were not being filled due to which development and maintenance work was suffering. The members of the Union said the five per cent ceiling on compassionate appointments should be scrapped.
Exams at UILS rescheduled
In a relief to students of the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS),Panjab University,Chandigarh,the university authorities re-drafted the date sheet for students to re-appear in the examinations. The students were not allowed to apply for re-evaluation or re-appear for the exams as the results for odd semesters were declared very late. In a decision taken by the PU Vice-Chancellor today,to whom the students approached for rescheduling the examination dates,dates for three examinations were changed. The fifth semester examination of Land Law was postponed from April 28 to May 15,the third semester examination of Labour Law was postponed form April 20 to May 14 and Transfer of Property Act from April 16 to May 18.
Tree branch falls on bike on PU campus
A motorcycle at the parking area of the Department of Law,Panjab University,Chandigarh,was badly damaged when a tree branch fell over it. The huge branch fell from a height causing damage to the motorcycle. Panic was created among students as a bee hive attached with the branch also fell down. Students standing nearby,along with the security men,rushed to the spot and sprayed fire extinguishers on the hive. Nobody was hurt in the incident.In another incident,at hostel Number 2,Panjab University,two Honda Activa scooterettes were completely damaged in a fire in the wee hours on Monday. These were parked in the hostel parking and belonged to hostel inmates.
Awards for driver,conductor of the month
In a move to encourage its drivers and conductors,the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) is planning an initiative to reward them for their flawless services. A brainchild of CTU Director M L Sharma,all CTU depots will be announcing a driver of the month and conductor of the month and their names along with photographs will be displayed on the notice boards of various depots. Talking to Newsline,Sharma said: It is a move to encourage drivers as well as the conductors and I shall discuss the proposal with senior officials in the Administration after which we might also start a nominal cash prize for them. Also,those who would maintain the position for three consecutive months,would be rewarded reasonably. The drivers and conductors must have a clean record for that particular month and there should be no complaints or challans against them to be eligible for the award.
CBI files status report on mega projects
In the status report about the investigation into the irregularities in the mega projects submitted to the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate here on Monday,the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has stated that the inquiry is still going on in the matter. The CBI has stated that the inquiry into the irregularities in the allotment of the land at Sarangpur village by the Chandigarh Administration has still been going on. Advocate Arvind Thakur had complained about irregularities by the Chandigarh Administration in the allotment of land. The national investigating agency had registered an inquiry in the matter on January 27. It had received communication from the Central Vigilance Commission,New Delhi,regarding the irregularities in the allotment of 30 acres of land for the multi-media-cum-film city project in Sarangpur village to Parsvnath Developers and allotment of 73.6 acres of land in the Sarangpur to Unitech Limited.
