Ambala MLA seeks information on NREGS through RTI
In an effort to dig out fraud in the execution of the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) by the officials of district administration and forest department,Ambala Cantonment MLA Anil Vij has sought relevant documents through an application filed under the RTI Act. Vij in his application to Ambala deputy commissioner has applied for supply of copies of inspection reports made by the former additional deputy commissioners Sanjiv Verma and Wazir Singh Goyat and also inspection conducted by the SDM Mukesh Ahuja in April and May with regard to implementation of MGNREGA in the district.

Bhagwan Dass appointed Scientific Advisory Committee member
The Union Ministry of Agriculture,(department of Agriculture and Co-operation) has appointed Bhagwan Dass Gupta,Director of Punjab Young Farmers’ Association,as member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority. The 14-member committee,constituted under the chairmanship of V L Chopra,former member of the Planning Commission,will advise the authority regarding utilisation of funds available under the gene fund,framing and approving schemes for development of plant variety protection system and invoking provisions of compulsory licenses and compensation to the farmers for non-performance of a variety. It will also advise the authority on matters related to registration of new,extant and farmers’ varieties and will lay down procedures and guidelines for benefit sharing in respect of crop varieties.

Bail plea of Dera chief adjourned
The bail application of Sacha Sauda chief Gurmit Ram Rahim facing murder of journalist Ram Chander Chhatarpati and Sauda Manager Faqir Chand and exploitation of dera sadhvis was adjourned till tomorrow. Dera chief had sought bail from the Punjab and Haryana High Court from where his application was sent for disposal by the special CBI court here.

Experts discuss latest trends in lasik surgery
Rajiv Mirchia,a renowned lasik surgeon,dwelt on the latest trends in the field of surgery during an academic programme organised by the Patiala Eye Hospital and Lasik Laser Centre on Saturday. He said the improved laser and computer targeting technology will make the new systems more efficient and reliable. Mirchia said one of the latest innovations is a new 60 kHz laser that will enable the surgeon to create the flap in the eye quicker. Sukhdip Singh Boparai,chief consultant at the hospital and Anuradha Raj,consultant,also spoke on the occasion.

IMA organises Saronwala medal ceremony
The Indian Medical Association organised the 10th Dr K C Saronwala Oration and Medal Ceremony on Monday. PGI director K K Talwar was the keynote speaker. Talwar said that more than five lakh new cases of heart failure are reported in the US every year and the situation is not any better in India. He highlighted latest treatments for heart failure. Daljit Singh Cheema,advisor to the Punjab chief minister,was the chief guest on the occasion. Some medical students were awarded with medals,which were sponsored by the Saronwala Charitable Trust. The trust also announced monthly scholarships for deserving medical students in memory of Bipin Saronwala.

Social groups come out in Bir’s support
A number of social organisations have come out in support of former Patiala Divisional Commissioner Jasbir Singh Bir. They have written to the Punjab government not to accept Bir’s resignation from service. Bir had recently raked up a controversy when he submitted his resignation,following a row over the parking of private buses in Mohali outside showrooms,due to which he was removed as Commissioner and given another posting. The groups in favour of Bir are Patiala Social Welfare Society,NATS,Garden and Environment Society,Birji Foundation,Garden Walking Club,Shri Kishan Chand Goyal Memorial Charitable Trust and other societies attached with the Baradari garden.

Placement fest held for MBA students
Multi-national companies thronged the placement fest held for MBA students at Rayat Bahra Biotechnology Centre of Excellence at Sahoran village near here on Monday. MNC’s that participated in the fest included Pelsoft Labs Ltd,Embee Group Ltd,Hero Group Ltd,Ranbaxy Ltd,Reliance Communication,Saber Papers Ltd,Metlife India Ltd,Kapsons Retail,Aspire India and Grey-B Services. Participating candidates underwent rigorous selection procedure. They appeared for written test followed by group discussion and final interviews. The companies offered jobs at various locations and positions in the pay packages ranging between Rs 1.8 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh per annum.
