In 2014, city made way for 3,711 VIP visits

Chandigarh SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill said that the police cannot disclose the route of any person with high security.

Being the capital of two states, Chandigarh witnesses frequent visits of VVIPs. In the year 2014, the city saw 3,711 functions and visits of Indian and foreign dignitaries, according to the Chandigarh Police Annual Review of 2014.

The chief ministers of Punjab and Haryana stay here. They frequently move in the city and attend functions. Last year, the Punjab Chief Minister alone attended 299 functions while his Haryana Chief Minister attended 233. Besides, union ministers are frequent visitors.

Often, a VIP visit leads to disruption of traffic to ensure for the VIP a free passage.

Said, Nupur Lalchandani, a student of DAV College and resident of Panchkula, “It is a herculean task if I have to reach college on time on such a day.

The Madhya Marg is the main route for more than 50 per cent of the population, why does the police have to block it?”

The recent was the President’s visit for the convocation at Panjab University which led to traffic snarls. On his return from PU to Raj Bhawan, traffic coming on the Madhya Marg was stopped for nearly 20 minutes. Police officials said that it was necessary to ensure a safe passage to the President’s convoy.

Vinny Gupta, a research scholar at PGI, wondered, “Why the police cannot inform us a day in advance about traffic restrictions? We can plan accordingly and avoid such stretches.”

However, Chandigarh SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill said that the police cannot disclose the route of any person with high security. The result is that people get stuck.

“The ambulances are delayed, those going for important appointments are late. It must stop,” said Rakesh Sharma, a resident of Sector 34. He added, “During Modi’s rally in Sector 34, we had to take permission to go to my residence.”
