Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala’s younger brother, Digvijay Chautala, on Friday accused Congress stalwart Bhupinder Singh Hooda for “failing a possible Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) between the Congress, JJP and AAP” ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha polls in the state.
Digvijay, who is a JJP leader, on Friday held a press conference in Gurgaon, during which he said, “During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections there were talks of a Mahagathbandhan between AAP-JJP and Congress. But Bhupinder Singh Hooda proved to be an obstacle. In the interest of the state, everybody agreed on a formula of seven seats for Congress, two for JJP and one for AAP. Even senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was unhappy over the Mahagathbandhan not having come together. As a result, the father-son duo (Bhupinder Hooda and his son Deepinder) lost the Lok Sabha elections and other opposition parties also had to suffer the consequences.”
In the 2019 parliamentary polls, the BJP had won all ten seats from Haryana.
Digvijay Chautala — who is the general secretary of JJP — went on to add, “Bhupinder Singh Hooda claims he did not speak to anyone regarding an alliance. Hooda should clarify what conversation had taken place at UP Bhavan? If Hooda wants, we can bring those leaders who mediated and felicitated the talks. If Hooda compels us then we are ready to name names. We can also reveal the phone records of when we spoke to Bhupinder Singh Hooda and other senior leaders of the Congress.”
Digvijay also claimed that Hooda had become an obstacle in the formation of an alliance between the Congress and the JJP even after the October 2019 polls. Neither the BJP (40 seats), nor the Congress (31 seats) could secure a majority in the then Assembly polls held for the 90 seats of Haryana Vidhan Sabha. Then BJP had later formed the government in alliance with JJP, which had won ten seats.
Contacted for a comment on the allegations, Hooda on Friday said, “They (the JJP) don’t have any political relevance.”
