Homage paid to Major Shankla

A homage ceremony for Late Major Sandeep Shankla,recipient of the prestigious Ashok Chakra,was held at the Shankla Memorial at Sector 2 in Panchkula on Thursday

A homage ceremony for Late Major Sandeep Shankla,recipient of the prestigious Ashok Chakra,was held at the Shankla Memorial at Sector 2 in Panchkula on Thursday. The occasion saw a wreath-laying ceremony followed by a guard of honour.

Major Sandeep Shankla died on August 8,1991,while fighting terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir. Lieutenant General T S Gill,Sena Medal,Vishisht Seva Medal,Chief of Staff Western Command laid the wreath on behalf of HQ Western Command along with a number of serving officers,Junior Commissioned Officers and veterans of the Dogra Regiment.

Shankla’s parents and a few family members were also present.

Manju Kanwar,Major Shankla’s 70-yr-old mother said,“It is a day of pride not only for me but for India. The younger generation should take inspiration from the Indian army.”

Meanwhile,the officer’s father,Col J S Kanwar (retd) said,“It is patriotism that is running the Indian Army and not politicians.”
