Himachal plays host to over 1 crore tourists in 6 months

Despite monsoon-triggered landslides striking Himachal Pradesh, over 1 crore tourists visited the hilly state in the first six months of 2024, as per official data by the government.

As many as 1,00,87,440 tourists, including 38,882 foreign tourists, visited Himachal Pradesh with popular destinations being Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Dalhousie, Kinnaur, and Lahaul and Spiti.

Kullu and Shimla districts emerged as the top attractions, drawing 4,73,737 and 4,48,392 tourists, respectively, the data said.

Kangra and Shimla emerged as the first preferences for foreign visitors, with 14,095 and 13,881 tourists visiting these spots respectively.

A state government officer said, “McLeod Ganj in Dharamshala where Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama resides, is in Kangra district. Foreign tourists are always eager to visit this place. In the last six months, 5,114 foreign tourists visited Kullu, and 1,917 visited Kinnaur.”

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said favourable weather conditions in July have contributed to the trend, allowing tourists to escape the sticky summer heat of the plains and enjoy the scenic beauty of Himachal Pradesh. “Despite recent weather conditions affecting some roads, most roads across the state are open and are accessible to tourists and the general public. Himachal is also witnessing an influx of thousands of tourists in July, and these numbers are promising. We expect to surpass two crore visitors by the end of this year,” he said.k

The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of tourists keeping track of the latest travel advisories and road conditions through the helplines of the district administration, police department, and social media handles. “Tourist safety aand enjoyment are our top priorities,” he added.

CM Sukhu reiterated the state government’s commitment to the safety of visitors at various destinations in Himachal Pradesh. He said that the Public Works Department (PWD) is working diligently to clear road blockades and restore travel routes swiftly. The Department of Tourism and Civil Aviation is also encouraging tourists to check for updates on specific routes and travel with confidence.
Regular updates on road conditions are being provided by the district administration and Himachal Police so that tourists do not face any inconvenience during their stay in the state, he added.
