High drama was witnessed after eight of the 13 wanderer kids handed over to the district unit of Childline India Foundation (CIF) by the Railway Protection force (RPF) on Thursday escaped by scaling the door and wall of the CIF premises.
A couple of those who remained with Childline claimed that they had been working for a man called Rambo, who paid them for collecting water bottles from trains in Amritsar. Two of these 13 children were deaf and dumb.
Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Chairman Dr B L Goel had convened a meeting of the members to discuss the situation. The five remaining children were returned to Childline till CWC decided its next course of action.
Childline members had a tough time explaining how the eight children, who were drug addicts, scaled the door and the wall to escape from the premises after having food at noon.
I saw them wandering in the railway station and after inquiring, came to the conclusion that they were orphans. I thought that even if two of them become good citizens after going to Childline, they will remember me. That was the only reason I called up the NGO and handed over the children to them, said RPF Inspector Varinder Kumar.
However,a list signed by RPF that was given to Childline contained details of these children their names, fathers names and addresses. As per the list, they hailed from states like Punjab,Maharashtra,UP and Bihar.
Rakesh Malik,a Childline activist, said that those who escaped were seen sniffing a handkerchief laced with a whitener or white solution used as eraser on paper. Soon after having meals, they scaled the door and wall and fled, he added.
CWC Chairman Dr B L Goel said: After speaking to the children,it has emerged that they know about their parents. We will try to locate them before deciding our future course of action.
One of the children also said that Rambo was a policeman, who allowed them inside trains like Shatabdi to collect bottles. We will look into this aspect as well, he added. RPF Inspector Varinder Kumar, however, said that Rambo was the ring leader on whose command, the children used to work. I will hand over Rambo to the police in case I see him, he added.
