When Varun Davessar,a rallyist on the national motor sport circuit met with an accident in October while going to Haridwar with a group of friends and was admitted to PGI with a serious head injury, doctors were concerned about his complete recovery. Today, thanks to his steely determination,Varun is on the road to recovery.
According to doctors at PGI,whove been taking care of Varun, the lesion in Varuns brain was such that it could have caused permanent damage to the right side of his body. This could have caused speech problems and also affected his right arm and leg movements. Fortunately, both his speech and motor movements on the right side are 100 per cent normal, smiled one of the doctors.
Doctors admit that Varun, who is in his late 20s,has done phenomenally well because of his mental toughness and insistence on regular physiotherapy. Many people with such injuries do not undertake such intense physiotherapy and give up on account of pain. But Varun refused to be defeated by pain. Usually, patients with such injuries take about three months to recover, but Varun made rapid recovery within three weeks, pointed out Varuns doctor.
Varun says he did not get demotivated despite his condition. The doctors had expected I would be able to walk three-four months after I regained consciousness. Even though I had little strength,I tried to walk five days after I regained consciousness. I got tired soon and was in much pain, but I decided to push myself as far as doctors would allow me, he points out.
Varun regained consciousness ten days after his mishap. He spent only three weeks at PGI,and then moved to his residence at Mohali. I take a normal diet. I am not as strong as I was earlier – doctors say it takes six months for the body to come back to normal. I have been particular about following the doctors instructions regarding rest and dont go out much and dont drive either. Since doctors have told me that walking is good for me,I try to remain active, Varun owns a car workshop in Mohali. Varun says his father,Surinder Mohan Sharma, played a major role in his recovery. He kept my morale high at all times and stood by me like a rock. Way to go!
