The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday ordered the Haryana government to maintain status quo on the land acquisition process wherein Padma Shree awardee artist Anjolie Ela Menon’s land in Ghatta village of Sohna tehsil in Gurgaon is being acquired.
Taking up Menon’s petition, the division bench comprising Justices Hemant Gupta and Raj Rahul Garg also issued notice of motion to the Haryana government to file its reply by December 15.
According to Menon, the state government is acquiring her land measuring two kanals and eight marlas for development of sectoral roads for Sector-58. Along with Menon, another resident of same village, Primila Lewis, has also challenged acquisition of her three kanals and six marlas land.
Both the petitioners have mentioned that the state government had pursued the environmentally egregious land acquisition ignoring petitioners’ objections relating to the 72 metre wide L-shaped sectoral road that is to cut through the moderately dense forest to connect two existing wide roads though Lewi’s existing dwelling house “only to serve the interests of a private builder”.
