Haryana releases Delhi’s water share

After the Supreme Court held Haryana guilty of non-compliance with its order to release 125 cusecs of water for Delhi, the neighbouring state started releasing Delhi’s share of water on May 15.

After the Supreme Court held Haryana guilty of non-compliance with its order to release 125 cusecs of water for Delhi, the neighbouring state started releasing Delhi’s share of water on May 15.

This water will help the Nangloi Water Treatment Plant (WTP) to achieve its ‘optimum’ production capacity of 40 million gallons per day. And with that the Capital’s western parts will heave a sigh of relief.

On the first day the supply was increased, the Nangloi WTP produced 34 MGD. The production touched the 35 MGD-mark on May 16. DJB officials say it will soon reach the maximum 40 MGD-mark.

“We are now getting proper water supply through Haryana. The production at Nangloi WTP has already reached 35 MGD,and it will soon reach 40 MGD,” Delhi Jal Board (DJB) CEO Ramesh Negi said.

In its order on May 10,2000,the Supreme Court had directed the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) to give 125 cusecs of water to Delhi.

This water, released from Punjab, was to reach Delhi through Haryana. But later, keeping in view the safety of the canal system, the Central Water Commission (CWC) reduced this supply from 125 cusecs to 60 cusecs. Then two years ago, after a fresh inspection of the canal system, the CWC ordered to release the full 125 cusecs.

“But Haryana was only releasing 60 cusecs against its mandate to release 125 MGD,which led to under-functioning of the Nangloi WTP,” a senior DJB official said.

Now,with increased supply the production capacity of the Nangloi WTP has almost doubled, benefiting parched areas of West Delhi like Vikaspuri,Najafgarh,Dwarka,Palam and adjoining rural areas.

BBMB regulates the supply of Sutlej,Ravi and Beas water to Punjab,Haryana,Rajasthan,Delhi and Chandigarh.
