In order to make the national highways safer for commuters, the Haryana Police has written to the Chairman,National Highway Authority of India (NHAI),and Haryana Home Secretary to install smart cameras on the highways and construct observation posts every 20 km,“especially near the Shahbad track”.

“These sophisticated cameras can capture images of those sitting in moving cars,” Haryana DGP Ranjiv Dalal said, adding that the NHAI does not care about the safety of the highways it constructs.

“NHAI spends a lot of money in constructing these highways, but fails to look into the safety aspect. We have requested the NHAI to have a senior police officer in their panel to look into the safety of the highways.”

The move comes after a spate of highway robberies and the arrest of four robbers of a gang on Friday.

“While most members of the gang have been arrested and we are looking for the rest of them, the security on the highway has been beefed up,” Dalal said.

“In districts along the national highway,an additional force of 80 men has been deployed,” he added.

He said the police would also strengthen their network and keep in constant touch with dhabas along the highways for quick tip-offs.
