Contrary to popular perception that government grassroot heath centres find no takers in the city, around 7.9 lakh patients were treated at 43 civil dispensaries across the city in 2012,data with the UT health department reveals.
And if you thought that PGIMER was the only institute catering to the healthcare needs of lakhs of patients in the region, think again! The UT department has contributed equally substantially with its civil dispensaries,sub-centres and the Government Multi Specialty Hospital,Sector 16,having attended to over 18 lakh patients last year. In the corresponding period,PGIMER,which provides tertiary care to patients from the entire northern region, catered to 19 lakh patients in all of its OPDs. To top it all,the UT health department has also earned a revenue of Rs 1.54 crore last year.
The Government Multi Specialty Hospital in Sector 16 follows the dispensaries in terms of patients treated, having tended to 5.96 lakh of them. Of these,53,822 patients have been treated at the Paediatrics department,1.5 lakh were admitted to the Casualty ward while 1.11 lakh patients were examined at the department of general medicine throughout last year.
Patients have also been given the benefit of government schemes and are not confined yo Chandigarh alone. Of the 5.96 lakh treated at the GMSH 16,12,576 patients were given free treatment under the poor free treatment scheme of the government and while 51,467 patients were from Chandigarh,16,553 were from Punjab and 9,879 patients landed here from Haryana.
Speaking with Chandigarh newsline,Dr Rajiv Vadera, the director of UTs Health Services, said: We are making an effort to get more doctors from NRHM. Once we are able to get doctors,we will be able to extend these benefits to more patients such as the children and the elderly in the evenings as well. Besides,we are also in the process of strengthening our labour rooms and emergency services.
The Administration is also making efforts to further improve the healthcare system. The recent budget has allocated Rs 11.95 lakh for the upgradation of the CHC,Mani Majra,to a 100-bed hospital; the CHC,Sector 22,to a 100-bed hospital and the Polyclinic at Burail to a 50-bed hospital.
