GMADA to allot up to 40 acres of land for dedicated dumping ground: Mohali Mayor

To address the growing issues surrounding waste management in Mohali city, Mayor Amarjit Singh Sidhu met with GMADA’s Chief Administrator Vikas Sarangal on Tuesday, seeking urgent solutions.

During the meeting, held in the presence of residents and municipal councillors from Phases 5 and 11, Sidhu submitted a formal request to the GMADA official. The letter highlighted the foul smell and other issues caused by the RMC point in Phase 5 and the garbage processing plant near the railway line in Phase 11, both located in close proximity to residential areas.

“The constant stench from these facilities has made life difficult for nearby residents,” Sidhu said. “As opposition to these garbage processing units grows, it has become essential to relocate them outside the city limits.”

He urged the GMADA to provide an alternative site where the facilities could be shifted without impacting residential zones.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the Mayor said that GMADA chief administrator has assured the allotment of approximately 30–40 acres of land near Jhajjeri to Mohali Municipal Corporation for establishing a dedicated dumping ground. “This move will help effectively manage the city’s growing waste and address related environmental challenges,” Sidhu added.

Present during the meeting were councillors Harjeet Singh Bholu, Sucha Singh Kalor, Jagdish Jagga, Sarpanch Ranjit Gill (Jagatpur), and local residents.
