Daphy Brar paints the dreams and aspirations of women

Like the venue of the exhibition,a bistro,Daphy Brar’s artwork has a whiff of freshness. Painted in bright colours with bold figures, her paintings depict the dreams, aspirations and relationships in the life of women. “The exhibition touches upon the beautiful moments in the life of a woman, from her sensuality to her relationships. The animals and insects in the artwork depict the men in her life… Fireflies depict men who keep hovering around her. Butterflies and dragonflies are those who have touched her life only briefly,” says Brar, adding that she has portrayed herself and sister Bonnie “as metaphors”.

One of the paintings titled The Phantom,is like a dialogue on relationships. It has the man in her life (a tiger),who briefly touched her (a dragonfly). “It shows the woman of today. She is happy with life,” says Brar. In one of her paintings she dresses a woman in a transparent saree, with a tattoo adorning her leg. “I am a fashion designer and it comes naturally to dress aesthetically,” she says, pointing out to another work titled Firangi Paani Tree & Us. This portrays the bond between two sisters with wings, who are ready to fly. “The wings given to them depict the sense of freedom they enjoy,” smiles Brar.

The other paintings also celebrate womanhood. Says Brar,“The painting Quadriptych, that has four frames, depicts pink leaves,a farm and a scarf hanging on a rope. It talks about the way women live.” Talking about the canvas titled Friends, she adds,“Life would be incomplete without them.”

It’s not just paintings, frames too have been customised. “I want everyone to enjoy the complete experience. That’s one of the reasons I chose to host the exhibition at Bistro Flamme Bois. I want a diverse audience and when Karan Deep Singh Suri, the owner of the place, offered to exhibit my collection here,I agreed,” says Brar. This is the first exhibition hosted at the Bistro. Says Suri,“Art can be best enjoyed in a relaxed mood. I have a specialisation in sculpture and I am happy to promote art,” says Suri.

The exhibition is on at Bistro Flamme Bois,Sector 7,till March 12. Contact: daphybrar@gmail.com
