After a series of delays, the plan to put up an iron overhead bridge at the Panjab University to connect the Vice-Chancellor’s office with the Rose Garden opposite it,was aborted and the bridge was finally placed at the Students’ Centre on Tuesday.

Sources in the university claim besides the Rs 3 lakh spent on the bridge, another Rs 1 lakh has been used for to fix it.

Placed from the beautification point of view, according to PU authorities, the bridge at the Students’ Centre, however, hardly seems to be serving any purpose.

After the bridge procurement process had started, the Architecture department said it was not feasible to have a bridge near the V-C’s office as it was not safe considering anyone could enter the building.

Though the authorities are not ready to give the exact cause for delay,Vice-Chancellor Professor R C Sobti said it was due to negligence on part of the Executive Engineer,as he failed to carry out a feasibility study on the project.

Talking to Newsline,Professor Sobti said,“All I can say is that no money has been wasted in the entire process as the same bridge has been placed near the Students’ Centre now”.

Ashok Goyal,a Fellow at the university, said,“I am not aware of such a bridge being placed but will definitely look into the matter. The university should not be going around spending funds like this and the V-C is the best person to speak on the issue.”
