With the limited services of ten vehicles,the much-hyped radio autos hit the roads on Wednesday. The scheme was flagged off by Transport Secretary Ram Niwas from the Secretariat building. The autos can be booked round-the-clock by dialling 4242424.
Residents eagerly waiting for the pink-coloured autos can finally get a ride on Thursday when the autos start plying from 7.30 am. The fare has been fixed at Rs 10 for the first kilometre and then Rs 8 for subsequent kilometres.
The radio autos would add another mode of public transport for city residents. Chandigarh is the first city to initiate such a service. The transport system will see more improvement in the future with the addition of 100 new buses under the JNNURM scheme by October, said Niwas.
The operator,Tricity Tours and Travels,is hoping to add the number of vehicles in the coming months. Another operator,Indus Taxi and Travel Services Private Limited,has also been given the licence to run autos. The company is expected to start the service by October.
State Transport Authority Secretary,Vandana Disodia,added,People are eagerly awaiting the pink autos as my office used to receive numerous calls everyday enquiring about when the service would start. Our endeavour is to provide convenient public transport to residents.
