After polio,Rotary wants to work for literacy
When Glen W Kinross took over as the president of Rotary International in 1997-98,several discussions were taking place regarding the need for polio eradication. Work was in full swing. We were adopting all possible means to spread awareness. The results are tangible now, says Kinross,as he spoke about the campaign, before the Rotary District 3080 Conference began at Tagore Theatre,on December 18 and 19.
Maternal and child health, and drinking water scarcity are also concerns that require attention. All countries should unite and stand as one. Out of 140 million children born across the world in an year, about 8.8 million die before their fifth birthday because of water-borne diseases, says Kinross, pointing to the need for water purification and conservation.
Also in attendance at the conference were Rotarians Madhukar Malhotra,RK Saboo,Manpreet Gandhiok,Manmohan Singh,Ajay Vij,Dalip Patnaik,RK Sindhwani,Rakesh Aggarwal and Lakshmi Sagar. Rotary was formed from one club that grew because of its noble work. Now we want everyone to work towards making the world a better place, says Kinross.
