Fog grounds flights, delays trains

"All the flights were cancelled due to low visibility in the morning. The majority of the flights affected were for Delhi as Delhi was much more affected by dense fog," said an official at the Chandigarh Airport.

All the 14 flights operating from Chandigarh were cancelled on Friday due to low visibility caused by dense fog. No flights from any destinations between Delhi and Mumbai  could land or take off.

Among the cancelled flights were JetKonnect (India) 2652 from Chandigarh to Delhi; Jet Airways (India) 2652 from Chandigarh to Delhi; Jet Airways 7076 from Chandigarh to Delhi; Spice Jet 2112 from Chandigarh to Delhi; Go Air 382 from Chandigarh to Mumbai; Air India 863 from Chandigarh to Delhi; Jet Airways 467 from Chandigarh to Mumbai; JetKonnect 5082 from Chandigarh to Mumbai; JetAirways 2658; IndiGo 463 from Chandigarh to Mumbai; and Spice Jet 2116 from Chandigarh to Delhi.

As the flights were cancelled, the passengers had to suffer at the hands of some of the airline operators who failed to inform them about the status of the flights.

Some trains were also delayed for up to seven hours, following the thick fog in the morning. Howrah Delhi Kalka Mail (12311) from Delhi to Kalka which has a scheduled arrival at Chandigarh Railway Station at 3 am, was delayed by seven hours and 45 minutes.

Unchahar Express (14217) from Allahabad Junction to Chandigarh was delayed by 10 hours and 25 minutes, Lucknow CDG Express (12231) running from Lucknow to Chandigarh was delayed by one hour and 45 minutes, Kalka Shatabdi (12011) running from New Delhi to Kalka was delayed by two hours and 25 minutes while Lucknow Express (12232) was also delayed by two hours.

However, according to the meteorological department, the dense fog in the morning and late night will remain for another two days. Surinder Paul, director (MeT department), said, “The foggy conditions are expected to prevail till February 2 and the next three days will remain cloudy. There are chances of rain on February 3 while the temperature will fall in the morning due to cloudy weather.”
