Focus on people living near construction sites: Niwas to NGOs

The Chandigarh Administration is going to celebrate Integrated Child Development Services Week from November 14.

The Chandigarh Administration is going to celebrate Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Week from November 14. This was announced by Secretary (Social Welfare) Ram Niwas during a meeting on Monday.

The Department of Social Welfare has chalked out a series of programmes for the week. The celebrations will commence from Bal Bhawan with a cultural programme by special children. A baby show for children in the age group of 2-3 years,sports events for children at Dadumajra,quiz competition for mothers of anganwadi children and demonstration of low cost recipes by the Food and Nutrition Board will be organised during the ICDS week.

Niwas said the Ministry of Women and Child Development had directed the Administration to celebrate the week.

While officials were asked to conduct health camps for children,NGO members present during the meeting were told to focus on the families and children living at construction sites in the city.

Contractors who are not providing adequate facilities should be either fined or their licence be cancelled,Niwas said.

It was further deliberated to call a meeting with contractors to exhort them to abide with their duties towards the labour on their sites as per the stipulated Act.        

Niwas requested all NGOs to continue the programme for at least six months and not restrict themselves to the week criteria.

The Home Secy further said labourers on construction sites should be motivated to get their children attached with the alternative innovative or anganwadi centers.

“They could also be sent to the Snehalaya vocational training centre in Maloya,” he said,adding that special meals be served to children on certain days during the ICDS Week.

Deputy Commissioner Brijendra Singh,ADC Captain P S Shergill,Director Social Welfare Amandeep Kaur and representatives of various NGOs attended the meeting.
