BJP general secretary and chief spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad today demanded that the letter written by Finance Minster Pranab Mukherjee to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh about his room being bugged be made public. He said the comment by Home Minister P Chidambaram that it was not a big issue was the biggest comedy of independent India.
Prasad said that Manmohan Singhs government was drifting apart. The left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. The PM is acting like the CEO of a private company working for its owners, he said.
Prasad said the office of the finance minister was bugged, yet he did not trust the home minister or the IB Director. Rather he wrote to the PM. After 10 months when the letter was leaked, the home minster says he did not know an inquiry was conducted.
Commenting on the Lokpal Bill,Prasad said the government is not clear on the provisions of the Bill. BJP is in favour of an effective Lokpal law. However,we need to have a base document to study the provisions. An all-party meeting has been called on July 3. We hope that by then some tentative view of the government would become clear, he said.
He said the Congress has the habit of blaming everything on the RSS and this was happening now with Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev. He further said when Congress says that the party will act against corruption,it is a joke, and pointed to the 2G scam and the Commonwealth Games scam.
Prasad said in the past three-and-a-half years, inflation has been on the rise and common man is suffering under an economist PM. The government keeps saying that inflation would reduce and keeps setting new deadlines. The government keeps saying that the petroleum companies are suffering. However, balance sheets of the oil companies show that they have been making huge profits. We will demand that the government give an official statement on the issue. The government is torturing common man so that the oil companies can profit.
Prasad said one or the other Congress leader keeps saying that Rahul Gandhi should be made the PM. He should be given a chance. Let the country see if he has the talent and potential to run a country like India. Congress lost in Bihar in the constituencies that he toured. The arrogance of the Congress is similar to what the party had shown when Emergency was imposed in 1975. The party is getting embroiled in controversy and is becoming undemocratic. They are talking language of Emergency without imposing it, he said.
