Apprehending that he may attempt to escape,the Chandigarh Police wants high-security arrangement for Basant each time he is produced before a court. Basant,a dismissed Chandigarh Police constable,is accused of committing murders of three people,including Inspector Sucha Singh.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Crime) Satbir Singh has shot off an official communication raising issues of tight security and possibility of Basants escape. The letter,sent to Senior Superintendent of Police Naunihal Singh,states that there is a strong apprehension that Basant may make an attempt to escape and that he should be produced before a court only after making tight security arrangements. The DSP has also suggested that each time Basant is taken out of the jail to be produced before a court,he should be handcuffed. The one-page letter was sent on Tuesday keeping in view the criminal tendencies and psyche of Basant.

The Chandigarh Police has also decided to request the court to ensure that the murder trial of Inspector Sucha Singh is fast-tracked. To ensure this,the police have begun the process to file the chargesheet well within the stipulated time period.

Basant along with his girlfriend Sarita will be facing trial in Sonepat and Chandigarh courts. Basant is accused of murdering husband and mother-in-law of Sarita in Sonepat on April 18. For the trial,he will be taken to Sonepat and for the murder trial of Inspector Sucha Singh,he will be brought to Chandigarh. The Chandigarh Police will also request the court to complete the proceedings in the trial with the help of video conferencing.

He will have to be produced before Chandigarh and Haryana courts for the trial. Having seen his criminal mindset,he may attempt an escape. In order that he is not taken out of the jail,we will be requesting the court to complete the proceedings with the help of video conferencing, said a senior police officer.

Police remand of Basant and Sarita ended on Monday after which a local court remanded them in judicial custody. On the run after committing two murders in Sonepat,Basant had stabbed Inspector Sucha Singh to death on June 8 after he was confronted by the Inspector about his identity.

While the Chandigarh Police had failed to nab the assailant and Sarita who fled in an official vehicle,the couple was arrested by the Haryana Police from a hotel in Delhi after his friend,a Delhi Police constable,had helped the Haryana Police in tracking his whereabouts.
