The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has unearthed yet another case involving an attempt to transport sub-standard and non-approved rice to other states through special goods train along with the consignment approved by its officials.
The incident came to light on Saturday when FCI officials intercepted a truck loaded with poor-quality rice. Rice bags from the truck were being loaded in a bogey of the special train that was to take the FCI consignment of rice to other states. The FCI officials handed over the truck, which was carrying 180 bags of sub-standard rice amounting to nearly 90 quintals,to the Dharmkot police and also lodged an FIR into the matter.
Of late, several such incidents have been reported in which poor-quality rice was being transported to other states through FCI consignments.
It has been learnt that the sub-standard rice was brought from a local rice mill instead of FCI storehouses.
While police suspected the involvement of FCI officials in the matter, the agency claimed that it was being done in connivance with the local contractor.
As per the Central guidelines,no rice mill can directly load rice on the special train. It has to first supply its custom milled rice to the FCI authorities, who after proper quality check load it on the train for transportation to other states.
D K Jain,FCI District Manager, who reached the spot immediately with the railway police,said,Sub-standard rice was being loaded in the train by the transporter. We have lodged an FIR and also handed over the truck to the police.
It is due to the efforts of the FCI quality control staff that we were able to nab this consignment, Jain added.
Regarding the involvement of FCI officials in the incident,Jain said, The police are investigating the case and trying to trace the owner of the rice mill from which this rice was supplied.
We have also constituted a committee to probe into the matter, he added.
