Father, daughter among 3 killed in 2 landslides in Shimla; more rain in store for Himachal

Incessant rainfall over the past 20 hours triggered multiple landslides in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla district Monday morning, leaving three people dead, including a man and his daughter, in two separate incidents reported from Junga and Kotkhai subdivisions.

According to officials, the first accident occurred in Up Mohal Jot village under Junga subdivision, where a massive landslide struck the house of Virender Kumar, 35, son of Jai Singh. The collapse claimed the lives of Kumar and his 10-year-old daughter, Chhutki. Several cattle also perished.

Kumar’s wife escaped unhurt as she was outside the house when the incident occurred.

A senior officer said, “It has been raining continuously in Tehsil Junga for the last about 20 hours. Roads are blocked at many places.”

In another incident reported from Chol village near Kotkhai, a landslide caused the collapse of a house early Monday. Kalavati, 62, was buried under the debris. Despite rescue efforts by the villagers, she could not be saved, and was declared dead.

Authorities have warned of further landslide risks as heavy rain continues to lash the region.

The Meteorological Department has already issued a red alert for extremely heavy rain across Himachal Pradesh for the next two days, warning of landslides, flash floods, and road blockages in vulnerable regions.

The forecast predicts light to moderate rainfall at most places till September 2, with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations in Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla districts. Maximum temperatures are likely to fall by 3-6°C over the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the continuous downpour has also caused multiple road blockages in the Kullu district. Restoration of blocked roads is underway.

According to the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), National Highway 3 (Kullu–Manali) is blocked at Shirad Resort after a portion of the road was washed away. Several other stretches, including Bahang, SASE, Solang Nala–Atal Tunnel Road, Volvo Bus Stand, and Green Tax Barrier, are also blocked due to shooting stones and landslides.
