CITY RESIDENTS will have to shell out more for getting fancy numbers as the Chandigarh Administration has doubled the reserve price of most sought-after vehicle registration numbers.
The reserve price of number 0001 has been increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000. Similarly, the reserve price for numbers between 0002 and 0011 has been enhanced to Rs 30,000. People will also have to pay Rs 30,000 for 10 other numbers: 0022, 0033, 0044, 0055, 0066, 0077, 0088, 0099, 0100 and 0101.
The reserve price of numbers such as 110, 121, 123, 151, 202 4040, 4848 has been increased to Rs 10,000. Registration number 0786 has been included on the list of fancy numbers with a reserve price of Rs 10,000, considering the high demand for the number. The reserve price for any other out-of-turn number has not been changed from Rs 5,000.
With the craze for fancy vehicle registration numbers waning, the decision of the administration to increase the reserve price of such numbers has come as a surprise.
During the last auction, 0001 number of the series CH-01-BF went for only Rs 3.5 lakh, one of the lowest, in recent years. The auction for series CH-01-BE saw number 0001 fetching Rs 4.7 lakh. It was bought by Badheri-based M/s Aman City Developers Company. The number CH-01-BD-0001 fetched Rs 5.10 lakh and was purchased by Vijay Pal, a resident of Sector 8, who had bought the number for his new car, Jaguar XF.
The fancy number in the series CH 01 AP, 0001 went for Rs 26 lakh. To date, this is the highest amount pocketed by the RLA in Chandigarh from any auction of registration numbers for motor vehicles. The lowest has been Rs 70,000 for 0001 number of CH01 AF series.
Despite repeated attempts, registration and licensing authority (RLA) in-charge Amit Talwar was not available for comment. An official of the RLA said the move was meant to increase the revenue of the authority.
Coming soon: e-auction
RLA is all set to start e-auctioning of VIP numbers of vehicles. The software has been developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and has been successfully tested. To take part in the e-auction, one will have to get registered and submit draft of the reserve price. The applicant will have to submit mandatory documents — sale certificate, Aadhaar card and residence proof — online for taking part in the auction. The process of e-auction will be a seven-day affair, three days for registration and four days reserved for bidding.
