The open house,a special of the Panjab University student elections, failed to impress on Thursday as orators delivered passionate speeches to a thin gathering at DAV College,Sector 10.

Students went about their usual business rather than participating in the event. Far from the usual jeering and sloganeering by supporters, the campus wore a dreary look with a sparse display of colourful banners, stickers and posters.

It was only Karanvir Singh, presidential hopeful from SOPU,who managed to draw a few cheers from girls when he promised them a common room.

The other orators engaged in the traditional blame game. Vikas Rathi of INSO blamed the SOPU for “fooling” students with tall claims that never see the light of the day. He promised to ensure that the library and canteen remain functional during the night as well.

Students’ indifference was palpable as they condemned the activity. “The open house is a farce. Parties are given an official outlet to vent their hatred against each other. I have heard the open house for the third consecutive year, but nothing much has changed,” said Shruti Kapoor,a final year student at DAV College.

SD College,Sector 32,was the other college that provided an open platform to parties on Wednesday. Dr A C Vaid, principal,SD College, said the event was held immediately after a final list of contestants was put up.
