‘Educational institutes need greater autonomy’

Stressing upon the need to give more powers to educational institutes to improve the quality of human resource,Principal Advisor to the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII),Y.S. Rajan today said it will help colleges and universities bring their courses in sync with the changing needs of industry.

Rajan,who was here to preside over the convocation function of Punjab Technical University (PTU),where he has served as the vice-chancellor in the past,said Punjab’s growth depends on the rate at which its technical education sector grows. He also advocated funds for poor students to check drop-outs.

On the impact of the ongoing recession on the Indian economy,he said the impact can be reduced to a great extent by implementing employment-enabling policies,such as NREGA and Pradhan Mantri Grameen Sarak Yojna.

Later,degrees were awarded to students of various courses. PTU V-C Dr Rajneesh Arora presented a brief progress report on the university. Punjab Governor Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd) presided over the convocation.
