A “drunk” ex-serviceman allegedly shot at his wife, daughter, brother-in-law and the police at the Baddowal village in Ludhiana Monday night. The police arrested Gurtej Singh, 45, who had retired as a Lance naik, after moments of heavy drama where he allegedly threatened to blow up an LPG cylinder.

The Ludhiana rural police said they got a complaint from Gurtej’s wife Gurpreet Kaur on the 112 helpline number that her husband was trying to kill her and their daughter Gurrehmat Kaur, 16, and firing at them with his licensed weapon. The woman also told the police that Gurtej was heavily drunk.

Inspector Daljit Singh Gill, Station House Officer of Mullanpur Dakha police station, said that Gurpreet’s brother Talwinder Singh from the Kishangarh village also arrived at the spot. “Gurtej opened fire and blasted all four tyres of his brother-in-law’s vehicle when he arrived,” said the inspector.

A police party led by Assistant Sub Inspector Kuldeep Singh reached the spot to rescue the woman and her daughter. “An LPG cylinder was lying there. He was saying that he would fire at it, make it a bomb and kill his wife and daughter,” said ASI Kuldeep Singh in his statement recorded in the FIR. “He also threatened to kill the police party, and we had to lie on the ground to save our lives,” he added.

Inspector Gill said the accused kept firing continuously from his .12 bore pump action gun before he was arrested. “We recovered two bullets and six shells of fired shots from the spot. We will initiate proceedings to cancel his weapon licence,” said the inspector.

The police booked the accused under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty),186 (voluntarily obstructing any public servant in the discharge of his public functions) and 506 (criminal intimidation) and Arms Act Section 27 (Punishment for using arms) in the FIR registered at the Mullanpur Dakha police station.
