While he had earlier claimed threats to his life from the drug mafia operating in Punjabs jails, state DGP (prisons),Shashi Kant on Tuesday said the threats have now decreased after Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badals declared that the state would a wage a war against the mafia.
The DGPs earlier statement had taken the government aback and had created a huge controversy after he claimed the police were not taking action against the drug mafia despite possessing information against the racket.
Kant, who was in Kapurthala Modern Jail on Tuesday to oversee sports activities that were organised for the inmates, said that with the Punjab governments clear stand against the drug mafia, police will take strict action against the big drug operators.
On the role of police in checking the drug business, the DGP said the Punjab and Haryana High court has directed the state government to form a high-level committee of jail, police and health departments to formulate a comprehensive policy to check drug addiction and contain the mafia and has fixed the next hearing for March 27.
Kant also said the home secretary had reviewed the seizure of about one thousand mobiles from inmates by the jail staff and had recommended one to three years imprisonment for the offenders. These recommendations were under the active consideration of the government for amendments in the Central Prison Act,he added.
