A number of physically and mentally challenged youth are getting a chance to stand on their feet by being offered jobs at several outlets in the city. The KFC outlet in Sector 9, Panchkula, has recruited employees with hearing and speech impairment.

The training of these individuals is extended to 45 days instead of 30 days to teach them the special sign language used for interactions with the customers. The staff consists of 70% differently abled employees.

Special menu boards and writing pads are placed at the counter for customers to explain their order and a special light system has been installed to let the staff know when the respective orders are ready.

Kuldeep, one of the differently-abled persons who has been working with KFC since three years, expressed that he felt a sense of belonging with that place.

“This helps build confidence in the staff and enables them to thrive better in the environment, which is more friendly to their needs,” said Pranjal, the outlet manager.

An institution that deals with mentally challenged persons is Umeed, where they are trained and then sent to work in ice cream and fast food parlours set up by the institution.

As many as 18 outlets have been established in the Tricity, some of them in sectors 17, 19 and 18 and Rose Garden. Apart from that, they work at government places such as the DC office and private companies like TATA Motors.
