A diarrhoea outbreak has hit Phase 1 and Madanpur village in Mohali, leaving several people ill, including councillor Meena Koundal and her husband Ashok Koundal. The health department has launched an investigation in the affected areas, collecting 124 water samples for testing. Reports are still pending. Residents of Phase 1 have been reporting symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea over the past week. Social worker Ashok Koundal told The Indian Express, “Many in the area are battling this issue. We alerted the authorities, but my wife Meena and I also fell ill.” The couple visited a doctor for treatment on Thursday and Friday. While talking to The Indian Express, Civil Surgeon Dr Sangita Jain confirmed that medical reports from Madanpur, monitored by Dr Harman Kaur, have been received, but water test results are still awaited. Dr Kaur said in Madanpur village, around 18 people have shown mild diarrhoea symptoms. The health department set up a medical camp, distributing ORS and medicines. Teams conducted door-to-door screenings and collected water samples for analysis. When contacted, XEN Michael of the public health department clarified that initial water samples from Phase 1 showed no harmful contaminants. “Regular pipe cleaning and chlorination, as demanded by the councillor, were conducted. The situation is fully under control,” he said. Mohali DC orders weekly fogging In order to curb the spread of vector-borne diseases and diarrhoea, Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal has ordered immediate, coordinated action across departments in Mohali. Chairing a review meeting, she stressed weekly fogging in all areas and every third day fogging in hotspots to fight dengue, malaria, and chikungunya. Water supply and sanitation officials will now conduct regular testing of source and distribution points, while the local bodies department has been directed to issue challans where dengue larvae are found. “Negligence can risk lives,” Mittal warned.
