Dharna lifted after locals’ complaints, says Mohali DC

The Deputy Commissioner said that due to the dharna, the sangat coming to pay obeisance at the gurdwara were finding it hard to reach its premises.

Amritpal Singh, Amritpal Singh news, Amritpal Singh latest news: Mohali Deputy Commissioner, Aashika Jain, on Tuesday said that the crackdown on protesters squatting on Airport Road was necessitated as people, especially those coming to pay obeisance at Gurdwara Singh Shaheedah Sohana, had been facing problems.The dharna had also started to trigger some minor tiffs between the protesters and passersby.

Mohali Deputy Commissioner, Aashika Jain, on Tuesday said that the crackdown on protesters squatting on Airport Road was necessitated as people, especially those coming to pay obeisance at Gurdwara Singh Shaheedah Sohana, had been facing problems.

The Deputy Commissioner said that due to the dharna, the sangat coming to pay obeisance at the gurdwara were finding it hard to reach its premises, with people travelling on the occupied stretch also complaining of facing multiple problems.

The dharna had also started to trigger some minor tiffs between the protesters and passersby, after which members of various village panchayats and other residents of the city approached the administration and requested them to solve the issue.

“The dharna was broken up to prevent any possible conflict between the agitators and the sangat/common people. No one will be allowed to break the peace of the city,” Jain said.

The Deputy Commissioner then went on to add that traffic had been opened on all the roads of the city and no road in Mohali at present was closed. Jain said that the situation in the city was completely peaceful and normal, with police is keeping a close watch to prevent any untoward incidents. The Deputy Commissioner also sought the cooperation of people to maintain law and order.

Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Sandeep Garg, on his part, said that during the dharna, attempts were being made by some people to break the peace. Complaints were received from the sangat and some members of village panchayats.

“That is why the the dharna has been removed. We urge people to avoid falling prey to rumours,” the SSP added.

The SSP said sufficient information was being shared by the police administration about the situation. In response to another question, he said that some people, including some policemen, were injured during Tuesday’s crackdown and were undergoing treatment. About 25 persons have been arrested, he said.
