A day after a mother and her newborn child died at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital,Sector 16,family members of the victims blamed the doctors and staff for negligence,and created a ruckus at the hospital on Sunday over custody of the body.

The mother and brother of the deceased woman and her in laws entered into a heated argument over the custody of the body of the deceased.

According to eye witnesses,the situation worsened at around 11 am,when both the parties wanted to take Manju Rani’s (32) body after a medical board conducted a postmortem examination.

The brother of the deceased,Happy,alleged that Rani’s husband,Pawan,and in laws did not bother to save her life. “They could have taken her to a private hospital or PGI,where she would have got timely treatment,” Happy said.

On the other hand,Pawan said that they had done all that was possible,but the doctors let them down. Both the sides even came to blows and the police had to intervene. Finally,the body was handed over to Pawan,as police officials said that they had brought her to the hospital.

The child was buried on August 25 by Pawan. A resident of Manimajra,Rani and the baby had died on Saturday during delivery. The family members of the deceased kicked up a ruckus,blaming the doctors for the not providing timely treatment.

However,hospital authorities stated that Rani,32,had epilepsy attacks and fits which resulted in her death. The doctors also claimed that the baby had not been delivered when the woman died.

According to the family members,pregnant Manju was admitted in the gynaecology ward of the hospital on Friday. Pawan,who runs a meat shop in Zirakpur,demanded an inquiry into the incident. He later went to the hospital police post and lodged a complaint.

A police official said,“The family has alleged negligence on the part of the doctors. We will probe the matter.” The couple has a six-year-old daughter and eight-year-old son.

On Friday,a five-day-old baby had died at the hospital,and the family of the deceased accused the hospital staff of negligence.
