The state unit of the CPM on Sunday wrote to the Chief Justice of India, seeking Supreme Court’s intervention in ordering a probe into private universities, which have mushroomed indiscriminately in Himachal Pradesh.

Recalling that the Supreme Court had recently ordered the Centre to submit a report on the status of deemed universities across the country, member of CPM state Secretariat,Tikender Singh Panwar, said: “I have learnt that several parameters have been fixed by the committee to evaluate these universities, including aspects of governance, quality of innovations in teaching and learning processes, research output and its impact, doctoral and other research degree programmes, faculty resources and the admission process.” He claimed that the report submitted by the government to the court firmly stands to derecognise 44 deemed universities for providing poor quality of education in terms of faculty, infrastructure and innovations.

“Now,look at the case of HP,where more than a dozen private universities are being run. The parameters,if ever checked, will reveal that the status in these private universities was far worse than the deemed universities. There is a need to hold an inquiry into the functioning on the universities, where students are enrolled but are not required to attend classes. Such students are working in different states and turn up only to collect the degrees. This is a common practice in private universities in Solan district,” he added.
