Councillor Bahga finds support from Opposition

Bahga made the comments during a debate on the merger of 13 villages into municipal limits,on a private television channel.

Nominated councillor Surinder Bahga, who finds himself in the midst of a storm after accusing fellow nominated councillors of allegedly selling themselves to the Congress, found support from the Opposition including the BJP and BSP.

Bahga made the comments during a debate on the merger of 13 villages into municipal limits,on a private television channel. Apart from him,all the other nominated councillors had extended support to the resolution which was also opposed by councillors of the BJP,SAD,BSP and an independent.

BSP councillor Jannat Jahan echoed Bahga’s statements by calling the nominated councillors, puppets in the hands of the Congress. “The nominated councillors always support the Congress on all issues. They have been supportive of decisions that have harmed the city residents. The construction of a market in Mauli Jagran was stalled midway with the Congress bringing in a resolution and supported by the nominated councillors. Taxes were also imposed in the city with support from these councillors,” she said.

Last year, the nominated councillors had unanimously supported the Congress on all issues. This year,Bahga has been the exception. He had recently expressed his unwillingness to attend the inauguration of an overbridge in Sector 17 stating that while he was involved in the plans being approved,he was invited to the opening at the last moment.

Bahga also termed the Metro Rail project as being unfeasible. He had written to the Prime Minister as well highlighting the anomalies in the rehabilitation project at Dhanas. “I am not criticising anyone. As an architect,I can give my professional views on issues pertaining to the city. I have not made accusations against anyone or complained against the officials of the Administration,” he said.

Leader of opposition in the MC House Arun Sood said Congress has been misusing the nominated councillors to serve its agenda. “There is nothing wrong in raising the issues that Bahga has touched upon,” Sood said before adding that the BJP would oppose any resolution against Bahga.

Congress leaders,on the other hand, have been critical of the comments made by Bahga. They accused him of having questioned the integrity of the nominated councillors. A senior leader said that development issues are proposed by the ruling party and these are supported by the nominated councillors.
