Chandigarh Police are gearing up for the upcoming Municipal Corporation elections,slated to be held on December 17. Police have made adequate security arrangements and have identified sensitive areas were there is a likelihood of trouble during the polls. To make sure that the elections are conducted peacefully,over 3,800 police personnel will be deployed in the city during the elections. While 1,982 cops will on polling stations duty,600 will be on patrolling and 400 will be in reserve. The policemen will be drawn from various police stations and reserve forces. Central Reserve Police Force personnel will also be used during the elections. Besides preparing a list of sensitive pooling booths on the basis of political rivalry in the area ,narrow approach and population density,the police have identified 31 polling stations as sensitive out of a total of 157. Police personnel will also be keeping an close watch on the 12 areas which includes Chaman colony,Mauli Jagran colony Dhanas,Ram Darbar,Hallomajra ,Dadumajra colony and village,Pandit Colony in Kajheri,Sector 25 colony,Bapu Dham colony,Colony number 4 and 5,Indra Colony and Nehru colony. Police have also gathered a list of the candidates who have a criminal past and the data of candidates and their supporters who possess licensed weapons. A total of six candidates have been found to have police cases registered against them in various police stations. Speaking to Newsline,DSP (Law and Order) Ashish Kapoor said,We have deployed police parties in every ward from December 3 onwards and have given a briefing to the police stations of the sensitive booths falling in their area. He further added that a joint briefing of the election staff and the police personnel will be held where they will be briefed about the dos and donts regarding the elections. A reserve of 20 police personnel has been assigned to every ward while a reserve each will be kept at the disposal of the DSP and SHO of the area.
