Asserting that it was against the setting up of a Operation Bluestar Memorial and honouring former chief minister Beant Singh’s assassin Balwant Singh Rajoana at the Akal Takht, the state Congress on Wednesday said it will raise these issues in the Assembly.

Asserting that it was against the setting up of a Operation Bluestar Memorial and honouring former chief minister Beant Singh’s assassin Balwant Singh Rajoana at the Akal Takht, the state Congress on Wednesday said it will raise these issues in the Assembly.

Party president Captain Amarinder Singh, while speaking to mediapersons in Jalandhar, said: “The statement by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, which justified the memorial, was highly irresponsible. It is absolutely foolish for the state leadership to make such statements.”

Amarinder, flanked by CLP leader Sunil Jakhar, added that on one hand,Sukhbir was holding meetings with industrialists in Delhi to invite them to invest in Punjab,on the other side, the state government was creating an atmosphere against peace in the state.

Saying that honouring of the assassin of Beant Singh, who brought peace to the state,at the Akal Takht will be against the hard-earned peace prevailing in the state,he added: “Both these tragedies are the part of the history now. There is no point in raking up these issues by raising a memorial and honouring an assassin.”

Asked whether his statement will amount to defying the directions of the Akal Takht,Amarinder said: “I am not defying anyone but only putting the facts forward. It is for everyone to understand the reality,as both the memorial and honouring Rajoana are bad for Punjab and the country. Everything was being done with the approval of SAD,which controls SGPC.”

The party has also opposed the proposal of a memorial at New Delhi on the Sikh riots of 1984.

The defeated former MLAs took up most of the Captain’s time. Only a few MC candidates could manage to put forward their grievances. A few candidates even tried to stop two former MLAs from speaking length.

Meanwhile two candidates who were allegedly offered Rs 50 and 25 lakh by SAD leaders were also present in the meeting and expressed the pressures being faced by them from opposition. The candidates – one of whom has been booked for attempt to murder – informed Captain that there was huge pressure on them from police administration and that the state government was misusing government machinery to win elections.

Captain Amarinder Singh asked the contesting councillors to highlight anti-people policies of the government during their campaign including the levying of proposed property tax on the basis of electricity bills of the consumers in state.
