In the run up to the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress high command has sought names of probable candidates from the city, which have to be submitted by the end of this month.
As per procedure, the names that are sent to the party high command should have the consent of different committees of the party, including the councillors.
A meeting of the election committee is held and after consideration, the names of the probable candidates are sent.
In case someone opposes candidature of a person, the dissent is also conveyed to the party high
command.
President of Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee B B Bahl said,The names have to be sent till the end of the month. The party high command would study the merits of the candidates and then finalise one person to whom ticket would be given to contest.
MP Pawan Kumar Bansal has been a favourite name in the recent years as he has won every time, except 1996,since he was selected for elections in 1991.
After winning the elections in 1991,Bansal lost the Lok Sabha elections in 1996 and 1998. Thereafter, he emerged victorious in the three Lok Sabha elections including 1999,2004 and 2009.
But recently, names of other leaders in the party, who would be interested in contesting from the city, have started emerging, following the arrest of Bansals nephew Vijay Singla in the rail bribery scam and his subsequent step down from the Railway Ministry. These included Venod Sharma,Manish Tewari,Kapil Sibal and Ambika Soni. All these leaders have a Chandigarh connection.
Meanwhile, incharge of the Chandigarh,Punjab and Haryana units of the party,Shakeel Ahmed would be visiting the city on October 6.
