City Congress president Pardeep Chhabra and Mayor Arun Sood are at loggerheads over the installation of national flag in Sector 17 plaza.

As the proposal of installing a 101-feet high national flag at Japanese Garden, mooted by senior deputy mayor Davesh Moudgil, being approved, Chhabra had raised the issue that a similar flag should also be installed in Sector 17 because it receives the maximum tourists.

“The Sector 17 plaza of Chandigarh is known across the country. We did not oppose the installation of national flag in Japanese Garden. But, why the same cannot be installed in Sector 17 plaza. The mayor is biased towards Sector 17. Earlier, their government had opposed the installation of a laser fountain in Sector 17 plaza, which I got installed there,” said Chhabra.

Sood said Moudgil’s proposal to install a national flag at Japanese Garden was approved in the House. “Moudgil did the hard work and got the proposal with all the details in writing for the approval of the house. He (Chhabra) can go through the same process to get his proposal approved. Isn’t it a disparity with the southern sectors if we install everything in the northern belt,” said Sood.

He added that the issue was taken up in the last House meet and the House is the supreme. Chhabra said he got a written proposal made. “Le Corbusier must have thought something while preparing this plaza. The mayor always ignores Sector 17 despite knowing that it is the heart of the city.”

The installation of a national flag at Japanese Garden was initially placed and discussed in the Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) meeting where it was decided to place it before the general house for discussion and approval.
Moudgil had been raising the issue for the past one-and-a-half year.

The garden is one of the city’s tourist attraction, spreading across 14 acres. The project will cost around Rs 17 lakh. Moudgil had proposed that the flag will be there round the clock and in the night hours, it will unfurl in the lights.
