Precautionary measures
It appears the Chandigarh bureaucrats have become cautious about leaving the country on official visits, since it was revealed that the babudom cost the UT exchequer nearly Rs 50 lakh for their official trips abroad. Given the unending controversies and ongoing inquiries into the junkets, none of the UT bureaucrats went abroad on any official tour in 2008-09 (in the last 17 months),except PCS officer Amit Talwar, who left the UTs pockets lighter by over Rs 1.7 lakh. While the scare did manage to save the exchequer lakhs of rupees, the million dollar question remains would the money now be used for the development of the city?
Principal Bansal
The Congress leaders in the city have found a novel way to describe the Cabinet berth given to local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal. The new Cabinet Minister for Parliamentary Affairs is being termed the principal who enforce discipline in the Lok Sabha. Given the school-like unruliness ruling the Lok Sabha, the principal better be strict. A tall order indeed.
A recent PIL filed by the UT Administration has no opposite party. Officials in the HC Registry refused to clear the file for hearing before a Bench, arguing that the PIL was the first of its kind. So what would have been quite a one-sided affair was then referred to a senior judge for guidance. Finally, the PIL came up for hearing on Saturday, the last working day of the court before the vacations.
Tangled in wire
The Chandigarh-Ludhiana rail link has been in a state of limbo for almost a decade. After dilly-dallying and delaying the rail link for several reasons, the authorities have been handed a new excuse by some thieves who have stolen huge chunks of overhead cable being laid for the electrification of the Chandigarh-Morinda section in the last few days. As long as the cables keep disappearing, one can be pretty sure about whats causing the delay. Meanwhile,it is causing great inconvenience to commuters too.
Revealed
The Lok Sabha elections over,BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley donned the black coat again and was back putting his rhetoric skills to use in a courtroom in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. But given the drubbing the BJP received in the polls and all the flak he received,Jaitley wanted to keep the appearance as low key as possible. And he did manage to keep the visit off the media radar till the case was shifted to the Chief Justices court, which is forever under the media gaze. So,despite all his coyness, the media managed a glimpse of the leader.
